8 May 2025 marks 80 years since VE Day, when the war in Europe ended. Streets were filled with cheering crowds, flags waved from windows, and Big Ben rang out across London for the first time in years. It was a powerful moment of relief and remembrance — one that still resonates today.

VE Day was about victory. But it was also about courage, duty and resilience, values that remain alive in the brave men and women serving in our Armed Forces today.

What Does VE Day Commemorate?

VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany on 8 May 1945. It marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, though the fighting continued in the Far East until VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day) on 15 August.

Understanding the difference between VE Day and VJ Day helps us reflect on the full scale of the conflict and the sacrifices made worldwide. Both moments are vital chapters in our collective history.

Courage Then and Now

In 1945, the nation celebrated VE Day with joy and sorrow in equal measure. Relief that the war was over, pride in what had been achieved but also grief for those who never came home.

Today, our Armed Forces continue that legacy of courage and commitment. Whether serving on the front line, supporting NATO operations, or responding to emergencies at home, today's soldiers stand for the same values that defined the wartime generation.

At Survival Aids, we recognise that modern military service requires exceptional skill, resilience and bravery. As we mark VE Day 80, we honour not only those who served in the past but those still doing the job today.

Marking VE Day 80th Anniversary

This year, VE Day celebrations will take place across the country. From memorial services and veterans' parades to national broadcasts and Big Ben chiming once more, the 80th anniversary is a moment to look back with respect and look ahead with purpose.

For those serving now, VE Day is more than history. It’s a powerful reminder of the values they uphold every day.
